Banning drive-thrus is ‘right thing’

Comox Valley Echo July 10, 2009

Dear Comox Council Members,

I am writing to urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to proceed with your plans to ban drive-thrus. It’s time that Comox in particular, and the Comox Valley in general, made a stand and showed everyone that we are serious about making our home a better place to live. Yes, this will not solve a lot of problems but it does draw a symbolic line in the sand that shows that we are serious about creating a more pedestrian/bicycle friendly community not built entirely around the automobile.

I have been privileged to visit many European towns and cities and a vast number of them have chosen to ban cars from their centers all together. What a pleasant experience it is to stroll around a vehicle-free downtown! Obviously it is virtually impossible for Comox to follow suit, but at least we can make our town a little less polluted and crowded.

And what can I say about the full-page ad in the newspaper from the Comox Valley Drive-Thru Coalition? It is full of innuendos and misinformation.

1) It is NOT an infringement on people’s "Freedom of Choice" any more than banning smoking in public places is an infringement! Both actions are done for the general health of the population.

2) I have frequented all 3 Tim Horton’s in the Valley many times and the two that are not drive-thru seem as busy, if not busier, than the one drive-thru.

3) To serve the small segment of the populace that cannot get out of their car, why not bring back the old A&W system of curb-side service.

4) The Comox Valley Drive-Thru Coalition is mostly an insider’s group only looking after their self-serving interests. What are they worried about; their current outlets will not be affected. They will be free to carry on business as usual.

In closing, I implore you to BAN DRIVE-THRUS. It’s time. It’s the right thing to do.

I thank you for reading this.
